The students read the story Stone Soup about hungry characters from a lonely town. Everyone had very little food, but together they could make a pot of soup. Fourth grades brought a vegetable from home to contribute to the community soup pot. It all started with a few stones in a pot of water that would taste so much better if only there were some carrots…or onions…or tomatoes…and so on. The students used ulu knives to chop the vegetable they brought from home like turnips, carrots, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, potatoes and herbs. It was a great activity to practice cooking skills and concentration. The children thought it was one of the best soups they ever tasted!
